You’re probably well aware that most people think of the formula for water as H2O, but did you know there is a fourth phase of water beyond liquid, solid and vapor and that is most commonly expressed with the formula H3O2? This H3O2 or 4th phase of water is known by many names including structured water, EZ water, gel water and vortexed water and it is known for its ability to store and release energy. It is more hydrating than H2O and is found naturally in Nature. Many scientists have just dismissed water as a simple substance, unworthy of study. However, structured water scientists know differently.
One of the first scientists to mention that water was not simple and could have more than three phases was physical chemist Sir William Hardy. He suggested this fact over a century or more ago. Since then, structured water scientists such as Viktor Schauberger, Dr, Marcel Vogel, Dr. Gerald Pollack, Dr. Masaru Emoto and many others have continued researching to understand why water is the foundation of life.
Structured Water Pioneer: Viktor Schauberger
Viktor Schauberger was one of the early visionaries of structured water science. He found the presence of structure and energy in water through his studies of how water interacts with the natural world.
Schauberger was an Austrian forest warden, naturalist, philosopher, inventor and experimenter, who grew up with a love for the Alps. With his work he made an extraordinary contribution to knowledge of the natural world. His motto was “observe and copy nature.”
Schauberger Discovered the Power of Vortexes
Schauberger found two forms of motion in nature: outward, expanding flow that is used to break down, and inward-spiraling, which nature uses to build up and energize. He ultimately discovered how vortices create energy, a scientific breakthrough that influences modern energy solutions. Structured water devices use this principle to energize and restructure water today.
With his discovery of vortices, Schauberger invented a way to move logs from high inaccessible mountain slopes through waterways called flumes. This method of moving timber revolutionized the logging industry in Europe in the 1920s. Schauberger found that by keeping the water just above freezing and creating vortices in the log flumes, the water was denser because of the strong bonds of the molecules, and could move not only logs, but also stumps, which had not been done before.
Understanding the Energy of Structured Water: Dr. Marcel Vogel
To fully understand the complexity of structured water we must understand how sensitive water is to energy. Water is like a chameleon when it comes to energy, just like a chameleon changes colors based on its environment, water changes based on its environment too, specifically to its energetic environment. Dr. Marcel Vogel was one of the first to study how water interacts with energy and natural minerals or elements.
Dr. Marcel Vogel was a top research scientist for 27 years for IBM. His most well-known inventions are the magnetic coating used on IBM’s hard disks for data storage, which is still in use today, and LCD (liquid crystal screens), seen in phone and computer screens. His development of LCDs led him to study the unique properties of quartz crystals and their power to hold energy and create energy, as well as their therapeutic application, which in turn led to his interest in water’s unique ability to hold energy as well. He spent over one year of his life focused on experiments to determine or deny the existence of the energized and structured state of water.
Structured Water Exists
Dr. Marcel Vogel was one of the first structured water scientists to demonstrate structured water exists by looking at water with a spectrophotometer. This instrument is able to see how light refracts through the water and determine whether the water is structured and in a different state.
In addition, with his research into crystals and water, Dr. Marcel Vogel discovered he could structure water using the energetic fields of quartz crystals.

Discovery of H3O2 the 4th Phase of Water: Dr. Gerald Pollack
Up to this point, structured water was a concept. We knew it was influenced by energy and could behave differently, but we didn’t know what it was doing molecularly.
Although structured water is not new, the actual molecular structure of structured water was not known until Dr. Gerald Pollack, a biomedical engineering research scientist at the University of Washington, discovered H3O2, the 4th phase of water beyond liquid, solid, and vapor. Dr. Gerald Pollack is the winner of the first Emoto Peace Prize for his research on structured water. He is still conducting research in structured water science today at Pollack Laboratory.
Structured Water Under the Microscope
From his studies of muscle physiology and water he discovered that water is a powerful repository of energy in muscle contractions. He also discovered that water behaves differently inside human cells. Through his research in cell biology, he found how water reacts with hydrophilic surfaces inside cells and the actual chemical change of the molecules that make H2O into H3O2 inside the cell.
Dr. Gerald Pollack coined the term EZ water because when water spreads out inside the cell to form structured water, it excludes anything that is not charged the same as the water around it. This prevents toxins and chemicals from entering cells. Amazingly, we have a built-in filtering system using structured water inside our body. You can learn more about what Dr. Pollack says about EZ water in this video explaining how water affects cells inside the body.
Proving Why Homeopathy Works with Vortexed Water: Dr. Luc Montagnier
Not only can water be influenced by the energy around it, it can store that energy like a battery. This gives water the ability to have a memory and transmit electromagnetic information. All water has structure and the ability to store memory, but the specific hexagonal structure is what has been deemed the best for living cells and information transmission. French virologist Dr. Luc Montagnier was able to prove this through his studies with water and viruses.
Dr. Luc Montagnier was awarded the 2008 Nobel Prize for Physiology and Medicine for identifying HIV as the cause of AIDS. Since then he has been studying the memory of water and how that affects viruses, our DNA, and other parts of our body. He found that certain dilutions of bacterial and viral DNA sequences can emit low frequency electromagnetic waves, just as we do.
Testing the Memory of Water
Dr. Montagnier developed a test that could be replicated in order to prove that water has memory. By reading the electromagnetic signals from a highly diluted water solution of DNA sequences – meaning there was no DNA left in the solution because it had been diluted so much – he was able to transmit information to a second tube containing only vortexed, purified water. We know structured water can carry more energy, thus creating a stronger signal. If the chemicals that make the DNA were added to the water, the original virus DNA could be duplicated with 98-100% accuracy.
Not only could he recreate a virus in water, he could do this in another country, just by sending them the electromagnetic signal sequence. This strongly supports why homeopathic medicine works using highly diluted solutions of remedies. You can watch him do this test in this interesting documentary.
The First Scientist to Suggest Water Memory: Dr. Jacques Benveniste
Dr. Luc Montagnier was the first scientist to prove that water memory was true, but French medical doctor and immunologist Jacques Benveniste was the first to understand that water memory was real. Dr. Benveniste inspired Dr. Montagnier to study water memory after working closely together in their scientific fields. Unfortunately, Dr. Benveniste faced much more ridicule and unbelief by the science community than Dr. Montagnier due to the results of his research in water memory.
Dr. Jacques Benveniste was head of allergy and inflammation immunology at the French biomedical research agency INSERM during the 1980s. He was one of the first scientists to discover water memory, but was unable to perfectly replicate his experiments showing water could hold memories because of the subtleties of how water reacts to energy. Dr. Luc Montagnier was able to replicate results during his tests only after discovering that human and other electromagnetic fields can change the outcome of the experiments.
Properties of EZ Water: Emilio Del Giudice
Dr. Emilio Del Giudice was an Italian theoretical physicist who also worked closely with Dr. Luc Montagnier. He is known for pioneering the quantum field theory of condensed soft matter, especially water. He worked with Giuliano Preparata at the Italian Institute for Nuclear Physics (INFN), worked at Niels Bohr Institute in Copenhagen, then became a member of the International Institute of Biophotonics in Neuss, Germany.
Later in life, he worked with Dr. Montagnier to explore water and living matter. In addition, he supported Dr. Pollack’s ideas using quantum physics to explain EZ water and water communication inside the cell. He published “The widespread properties of EZ water,” in Fields of the Cell, showing his research in structured water and how it is affected by living cells.
Water Consciousness: Masaru Emoto
Understanding how water reacts to energy is pivotal in understanding Dr. Masaru Emoto’s work. Exploring quantum physics and consciousness, his experiments show the extent of how water can change based on energy from conscious minds. Along with Dr. Jacques Benveniste and Dr. Luc Montonagnier, Dr. Emoto believed that water could be imprinted with energetic frequencies.
He’s best known for his experiments using high speed photography to show the molecular structure of water as it freezes under a microscope. He showed how polluted water, or water exposed to a negative environment was distorted and asymmetrical. Water that was exposed to loving words in a positive environment showed beautiful, complex snowflake patterns.
Dr. Masaru Emoto's Water Experiment Crystals
Dr. Emoto’s work has often been questioned. Changing scientific minds about a topic like water isn’t easy. Energy is hard to predict and it is hard to replicate when it comes from a living being. Scientists who have tried to replicate his tests have not always received the same results that Emoto did. However, when taking into account the dynamic way that water responds to human interaction, as also exemplified by Dr. Benveniste and Dr. Montagnier, they did see a change in the water – evidence that water does have consciousness and memory.
Sound, Vibrations, and New Medical Treatments with Water: John Stuart Reid
Acoustic engineer John Stuart Reid is carrying forward some of Dr. Emoto’s ideas using cymatics. Cymatics is the study of sound that is made visible, such as using sound to make patterns in sand on a table. With over 30 years of research and experience in the science of sound, Dr. Reid has been exploring how sound can make imprints on water and even affect blood in the body.
Studying cymatics is not new, it has been around for thousands of years. Even Leonardo Da Vinci and Galileo did some work in cymatics. However, Reid is merging and expanding ancient concepts with 21st century concepts from Dr. Emoto, to forge new frontiers in scientific research.
The knowledge that water has memory certainly opens the door to many applications. As the inventor of some new cymatics instruments, Reid is using these instruments to research medical treatments. Music therapy is a clinical treatment using emotion, but water memory may take that further by influencing the physiological and biological processes in the body.
The Latest Scientists Researching Structured Water
In addition to the scientists who have contributed to our understanding of water, there are still more who are studying the power of water and its significance in our lives. Scientists such as Dr. Antonella De Ninno, Dr. Laura Maestro, and Katrin Amann-Winkel have produced research proving Dr. Pollack’s discoveries and the 4th phase of water and water’s place in living cells. In addition, four major water research teams, Oxford, University of California at Berkeley, University of Stockholm, and Cornell, published articles on new states of water recently and are diving deeper into structured water science.
Water Scientist and Inventor of the AQUA ENERGIZER™: Joseph Johnson
When it comes to understanding structured water and explaining it to others few have had more impact than Joseph Johnson. Joseph Johnson is a water scientist, microbiologist, cosmic thinker, agriculturalist, creator of the AQUA ENERGIZER™ and founder of the Rainmaker company. He has helped many to understand concepts such as the entrainment effect, how a structured water device can emit the Schumann Resonance, and even how structured water can cross the imagined scientific barrier from physics to chemistry.
Johnson is continuing to research not only structured water, but also its effect in humans, plants, and the earth. As a microbiologist, he has deeply studied how energized, hexagonal water can change whole microorganism ecosystems and revolutionize agricultural practices. We look forward to his contributions to structured water science and a deeper understanding of why water is the foundation of life.
Proper Hydration: the Hydration Foundation and HyFo Labs
The Hydration Foundation (HyFo) is a collective of doctors, scientists and thought leaders that are forging new territories in the area of hydration. It is the leading authority on education about the benefits of optimal hydration from using structured water. HyFo was founded by water enthusiast and anthropologist Gina Bria.
To further the Hydration Foundation’s authority and presence in the industry, Gina Bria founded HyFo Labs, LLC in 2018, the Hydration Foundation’s lab built for structured water testing. They test water using the Pollack Lab protocol to set standards for structured water products to help people navigate through the structured water device market.
Exploring the Key to Proper Hydration with Medical Doctors
According to HyFo, restoring energy and cellular functioning through proper hydration is the single biggest factor in creating health and well being. Interestingly, a growing number of doctors and health care providers are looking at chronic dehydration as the root cause of many health conditions. They’re being bold enough to say that some solutions to complicated health problems may simply require proper hydration.
The Hydration Foundation has been featured on or in The New York Times, Thrive Global, NPR, CBS, Oprah Magazine, TedX, Goop, and by Dr. Mercola. Some of the participating doctors are: Dr. Ben Edwards, Dr. Christine Northrup, Dr. Gerald Pollack, Dr. Dana Cohen, Dr. Thomas Cowan, Dr. Zach Bush, and Dr. Linda Lancaster.
